THE SILVER CHANTEROn Wednesdy, August 6, 2008, the 42nd Annual MacCrimmon Memorial Piobaireachd Competition took place at Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, in which our own Pipe Major, Niall Matheson, was a competitor. The story of the silver chan The first such competition was held on August 24, 1968 with eight competitors. Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod, then Chief of the MacLeods of Dunvegan established the silber chanter competition with John MacFadyen and Seamas MacNeil. Dame Flora presented the winner, Hector MacFadyen with a silver chanter. This trophy has been awarded on 42 occassions since. The competition is now one of the top piobaireachd competitions in the world and never fails to attract superb exponents of the art. This years competitors, in order of appearance, were:-
This year's adjudicator, Iain The Isle of Skye Piping Society, with the support of William Grant & Sons Ltd. has this year taken over the running of the competition. It does this with the stated aim of carrying on the sterling work of those undertaking this role over the years since its inception and to ensure that the competition continues to be one of the foremost piobaireachd events internationally.
